Designing for Sustainable Packaging Hinges on Science, Collaboration

Sustainability certainly has drawn the attention of the packaging industry, which makes sense.

After all, a recent Accenture survey found that 83 percent of consumers expect businesses to make products that can be reused or recycled, and 72 percent buy more environmentally friendly products than they did five years ago. Additionally, 55 percent perceive paper packaging as more sustainable.

World Packaging Organization President Pierre Pienaar points out that the science of packaging must be a focus—to better understand packaging materials, to develop the correct packaging for the correct uses and to achieve more sustainable packaging. Globally, there is a need to share knowledge and technology and also for collaboration across packaging disciplines, he says.

We talk with packaging leaders and manufacturers at Pack Expo 2019 about sustainability, why it’s critical and how focusing on it can and should impact packaging innovation and design.

Participants:

  • Pierre Pienaar, President, World Packaging Organization
  • Robert Testa, Sales Director, BillerudKorsnäs
