Q: How would you encourage others to read at least 15 pages a day?A: I personally love to read before bed, but you can read anywhere! I always keep a book with me so that I can read if I’m waiting in line, on the subway, waiting for a friend, etc. It’s much nicer than checking your phone!
Q: What summer reads would you suggest for… a beach trip? On a long flight? Or for a staycation?A: Well I’ve been on a lot of beach trips this summer AND long flights so I’m an expert here? For a beach trip I love something light and fun. A few recent favorites are When Life Gives You Lululemons, The Hating Game, and Matchmaking for Beginners. For a long flight, I like a thriller. It distracts you. Something like Something in the Water or The Last Mrs. Parrish. And for a staycation at home, how about some historical fiction!? Beatriz Williams and Fiona Davis are two of my favs in that space. I just finished up reading The Masterpiece and it was just incredible.
Q: Do you prefer reading on paper or a digital device? Why?A: Paper, always! I bought a Kindle a long time ago and I ended up giving it away… I just like the way holding a real book feels. It’s a part of the ritual.
Q: Do you read multiple books at the same time? If so, how do you stay on top of different storylines?A: This is something I’m trying to do less of, but if I am reading a heavy non-fiction book or a business book, I will sometimes break it up by reading something lighter. I’m never really reading different storylines so that helps. If I’m reading fiction I usually get very invested and don’t like to read another book at the same time.
Q: Do you have any tips on how to get over a book hangover (the bittersweet feeling of finishing a really good book)?A: Look for other books by the same author… or do a book swap with a girlfriend (I love getting recommendations from my friends). Give her your really good book in exchange for her really good book!
Q: How do you decide what to read next?A: My readers, actually! I do a monthly reading list on my site every month with the latest books I’ve read and always ask them for recommendations!
Q: What are the benefits of reading for you?A: There are so many! It helps me relax, it’s a nice break from reality, it makes me a better writer, and I love learning. The biggest one probably, is that it slows me down! My life in New York can be pretty fast paced. Reading actually lowers your heart rate.
