Neoterix™ ST release paper is the first of its kind to precisely replicate a microscopic pattern, the Sharklet™ microtexture, to create surfaces that resist bacterial attachment and growth without the use of toxic additives or chemicals.

Inspired by the texture of shark skin, the patented Sharklet microtexture is biomimicry in action. Shark’s skin features a unique pattern and texture that naturally inhibits the growth of barnacles, algae and other microorganisms. According to a published study in “Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control”, when applied to high touch surfaces, the microtexture reduced surface contamination of two bacteria of concern in healthcare facilities, methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), by as much as 97 percent and 94 percent, respectively, compared to controls.

Sappi has developed new technology and holds exclusive rights to incorporate the Sharklet microtexture distribute Neoterix ST release papers worldwide. Like all of Sappi’s release papers, Neoterix ST acts as a mold for coated fabric and laminates. It is used to add texture and gloss onto these surfaces during manufacture and is then stripped away. Manufacturers can now transfer the Sharklet microtexture and its microbial resistance properties onto new products.
